Winter Break Outreach Experience
A Leadership Approach towards Community Engagement
January 10th through 17th, 2010
Sewanee, Tennessee
For the past several years the Outreach Office has sponsored an Outreach Trip to an overseas location during Winter Break. This year the office is offering a special local program that encompasses a service project combined with a unique problem solving challenge to the group.
Housing Sewanee Inc. is the local housing non-profit that has existed since 1993. It has built fourteen houses in the Sewanee Community and is in the final stages of finishing number fifteen. During the course of the week the group will be working on this home.
The group will also be involved in assisting HSI with a community assessment plan looking at how the organization will focus its work in the future. The following topics will be covered:
-Brief overview of the challenges of low-income families in the greater Sewanee
area.
-A brief history and tour of HSI and its former projects.
-How a non-profit housing organization works?
-Interviews with former clients.
-Session with a local banker about mortgage lending credit and who qualifies.
-What are the housing needs for the future in the area?
-What designs does HSI consider/ a tour of some alternative housing designs.
-Land selection on and off the domain.
